Like Mother, Like Son

It was a busy week at Camp Jackson.

Cole has struggled with reflux-like symptoms since very early on.  While he's been a good eater, and obviously gaining weight, his feedings have been a battle.
Our little guy cries through his bottles and burps.

Cole was prescribed baby Zantac.  While we didn't want our young son to be on medication already, we wanted to help ease his pain.We had been told over and over that lots of babies get reflux, that Cole will grow out of it, and to just be patient.

That didn't fly with us.  Cole was clearly unhappy, and we weren't content letting him suffer for the next 4-6+ months.

Our first stop was a pediatric gastroenterologist.  He also echoed what we had heard before - Cole has "classic reflux symptoms."  He prescribed a new medication and suggested adding rice to his bottles.

I was referred to another pediatrician by another reflux mommy.  I figured that one more opinion on Cole's symptoms couldn't hurt.

This doctor, who also has an interest in allergies, immediately recognized that Cole has eczema and likely has a milk allergy.  She was the first person to pay attention to my own history of eczema, allergies, and asthma (Hooray for someone actually looking at our son's family history... and noticing my medical alert bracelet).

We are going to try Cole on a hypoallergenic formula for the next 2 weeks, and we'll see from there.

My gut told me that there might be something beyond reflux going on with him.
He's obviously very much like his mommy, and it does not surprise me that he inherited some of my alien-like qualities.

The upside is that after years of trying to get my own symptoms under control, I feel armed with a lot of good information about this.

So, we're crossing our fingers that a formula switch helps him to feel better soon.
Hopefully Dean McGrumpy will turn into Dean McSmiley soon.

Hang in there, buddy!
